Are There Really Good Fats and Bad Fats?
One of the things we show patients is that there is a difference in good and bad fats. There are three basic types of fats: polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fat. Food packaging reveals the level of saturated and trans fats but does not list monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Part of our nutritional counseling is to know which foods or preparation methods involve these fats.
Certain types of fat are essential to provide the body with energy. Both unsaturated and saturated fats are necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. The different types of fat include:
- Saturated Fat ― Solid at room temperature, this kind of fat is found mostly in animal foods, such as milk and cheese, and meat. Saturated fats are also found to a lesser degree in poultry and fish, along with tropical oils such as palm and coconut oil, and, cocoa butter.
- Trans Fat ― Produces with a process called “hydrogenation.” Hydrogenation makes fat harder at room temperature thus increasing its shelf life. Trans fats often are the source of elevated cholesterol levels and should be found in the body in moderation. Trans fats are found in many processed foods, snack foods such as crackers and chips, some margarine and dressings, cookies, and foods made with partially hydrogenated oils.
- Unsaturated Fat ― Liquid at room temperature and appears mostly in plant oils. Unsaturated fat may help improve cholesterol levels.
